Power Research

First of all, i started off with a brainstorm of the word power and everything thing that relates to the word.These are the things that I came up with

Authority, Privilege, Right , Competence, Control, Vigour, Capacity, Ascendancy, Ability, Force, Command, Skill, Influence, Potential, Muscle Strength, Domination, Mastery, Energy, Rule, Oppression, Knowledge is Power and Power is Knowledge.

Knowledge has always been there , the knowledge we are given creates our personality. The position of the person with knowledge is the person with power.

The power of beauty is when the opposite attracts the person who is attractive, the attractive person is therefore the one with power.

The power of money is that to have materialistic things or food to eat and etc which makes  life easy, you will have to buy it and to buy it you need money and to get money you need to work for it.

advertisment like for example captialium, Love is power, reliigion, the government, crime, the power of speech, sexuality, the police, the law, role models.

In the oxford dictionary Power is the ability to do something, to influence poeple or events, the right or authority to do something. political authority or control.

The power of prayer- James 5:16-18 declares, the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

After building my brainstorm i decided t pick up a few things from the brainstorm which i thought could help me develop my ideas for my artefact. Ater the brainstorming i decided to look at one particular film called Equilibrium which is based in a future where being happy is a crime, cry and you will be arrested and reading contraband books or so much as looking at a smuggled painting is a criminal sin.

In Equilibrium power is demonstrated as the government considers that the citizens must take their daily medcine of Prozium, a powerful designer drug that stops people from feeling emotion. This shows that the government can have power over peoples emotions and also control what they do.

My opinion of this film is that the government in the film is very similar to our government in the sense of law which is what ever law the government sets for us we have no choice or say but to follow the law. Therefore, we can never predict what law is going to be set for us in the future.

During the research i came across identity tag in tooth which is a new improved identity chip. According to the Guardian newspaper this idea came about because of the difficulty and expanse of identifying victims of disasters from dental records. For instance after the Tsunami, identifying bodies relied heavily on forensic dentists. This is somethng the government is working on and who knows it could turn out to be the new ID  and I’m guessing that in the future this probably going to be the ID card you will never lose or forget to carry with you when attending an interview. But really and truly I reckon this is a plot by the government to keep an eye on us or probably another device they are looking use to find out people who are trying to cheat the system.

 

I also looked at another film called Minority Report which is also set in the future where crime has been virtually terminate from washington D C. The government uses three psychic called the Pre-Cogs and they have the ability to predict crime beforehand. In Minority Report power is demonstrated as the government has finally got a solution to stop murder before which they built a system valled Precrime. This system is so advanced that you can’t run or hide but the only thing to do is to turn your self in. Basically the government is say that they are arresting you for the murder you haven’t commited or know anything about it, this is the power of control.

My opinion about Minority Report is that the government have got a very high advanced surveillance which makes it almost impossible to hide from them and to be honest I think our government is looking forward to building a surveillance advance as the one in Minoroty Report.

Moreover, i looked at the MIlgram experiment which was a social psychology experiment conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram. The experiment was to measure the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure (some one with power) who instructed tghem to carry out a procedure that conflicted with their personal conscience. The experiment was taken place to figure out if the participants will obey orders to inflict maximum voltage of electricity.

 

 

 The experiment was a momory task in the form of reading lists of two words pairs and asking the participant to read them back and were instructed to administer a hock by pressing a button each time the participant made a mistake. However, the electric shocks was to be increased by 15 volts in insensity for each mistake the participant made during the experiment. This is almost crazy to me baceause the participant can hear the screeming of the student in agony but beceause an authority figure told them to press the bitton, the kept on pressing it and this means the electric voltage increased. This shows that people will always responsed to a higher power.

 

I looked at another film called Troy which is about two emerging nations that went for war beceause of Paris, prince of Troy and Helen queen of Sparta. Paris convinced Helen to leave her husband Menelaus and sail with him back to Troy. This created a prefect solution for Agomemnom king of Sparta and brother of Menelaus to seize the opportunity for more power. Therefore, he set off with 1,000 ships holding 50.000 Greek soldiers to Troy with the help of Achilles.

My opinion on this film is that power is established by the two nations going to war all because of love which means love is power beceause it blinded the Trojan prince from the conquence of what will happen by taking the queen of Sparta.
